Realtor – Maxwell Polaris

780-318-3434

Nidhi Kapoor is a successful realtor serving the Edmonton area since 2008. Supporting and mentoring families through the course of purchasing their new homes is very rewarding for her. Kapoor has been a recipient of many awards, including a 100% club award with Maxwell Polaris.

Before immigrating to Canada, Kapoor grew up in India's capital city - Delhi and completed her undergraduate in English (Honors.) from the University of Delhi. "My early years of life and character formation were influenced by my parents and teachers, who always inspired me to push through the challenges. After finishing my undergrad, I enrolled in French classes and became fluent in the language. I began my career as a teacher in Delhi and understood the importance of proper guidance and mentorship."

When and Why did you move to Canada? How was the initial life like in Canada, and what did you do?

"I moved to Canada in 2006 after my marriage to be with my husband. I faced barriers to finding a job in my field as my teaching credentials were not recognized, so I had to do survival jobs and build my career from scratch. I joined IKON Office Solutions, where I used to sell toner cartridges. With my background as a French teacher, I decided to take a French course from Faculty Saint-Jean, which helped me get promoted to the French sales department. I performed exceptionally well in the sales department, which motivated me to get into the real estate profession later on."

What were some of the challenges you faced when you moved to Canada?

"The challenges were quite a few, and there were cultural differences even with the people from my community as they had pre-existing stereotypes, which are not helpful for newcomers. As a mother of three children with few contacts, I was doubtful of my career aspirations in the beginning. In my close circle, people would say a woman of Indian origin cannot succeed in the real estate field. Despite the pessimism, I decided to enroll in real estate courses and began my new career. The classes helped me develop the communication skills required to become a realtor and gave me the knowledge to provide excellent service to the clients. I faced setbacks initially, and at times my fellow realtors discouraged me by stating that I should sit at home and take care of my family. I did not let this prevent me from achieving my goals."

How did you overcome the challenges? Did you have a support system?

"Yes, I was fortunate to have my family's moral support with me. My family supported my decision even when many people discouraged me, saying it's a male-dominated industry where I would need to work odd hours and do a lot of networking and socializing. Luckily, I met a fantastic woman leader who trusted me with her business and enabled me to have full potential in my profession. I had a strong support of peers who guided me in the right direction and helped me understand my leadership capabilities."

What advice would you like to give other women striving to grow in their careers?

"Through my experiences, I have learned that nothing comes easy, and if you want to achieve something, then you have to work hard. Once we put our minds on what we want to do, we should not be afraid of moving out of our comfort zone. Change is essential for growth and to achieve your goals."

What are your thoughts about GROW's initiatives and programs?

"GROW is a great platform to help immigrant women with the necessary information and guide them towards the right career path. As gender disparity exists extensively in the workplace, women mentors encourage women leadership at higher levels, particularly in male-dominated industries. Through various networking opportunities, I met incredible female leaders who make conscious efforts to empower women and minorities in the workplace. Therefore, I believe that GROW's mentorship and networking programs are helpful resources in encouraging women to excel in every aspect of their lives."
